Sure would like to see behind that grill.

My understanding is that a "9849A" is a significantly different animal from a "9849-8A", the prior being a sealed box with 900hz XO(see 1971 monitors catalog), and the latter being a ported system with 1500hz XO.

Well the crossover says "9849A" so I'd be pretty confient that's what it is, assuming it's one of the two. On the other hand my 9864-8A has a M500 crossover in it :-)

Which would you prefer?

Any chance you could post a picture of that m500 crossover board? I would like to see how close it is to the A15. I think at least the resistor values may be changed from one to the other.

I've never seen a 9849A in the flesh, i don't believe they were made in huge quantities. Altec must have had good reason to abandon that design and go with the ported 414.

That said, for the last year or more my 9849-8D's are the most played Altecs in my home. Forces besides preference are at work here. But, it's safe to say that the "8D's" will remain in system and use even after i get into the new place, they're that good at what they do.

Hmmm, everything this company sells that appears to be electronic in nature is listed as untested. I suppose the speaker could be busted......we know how to bust em! But by the time it's shipped at that price, it just isn't a good deal. I'd like a third actually.....although I've been a putz and haven't fired mine up yet! Only been 4 years or so.....

What are you seeing for shipping? For me the total is under $100 given the $10 opening bid.
